Search teams looking for the missing Malaysia Airlines MH370 think they have stumbled across a 19th-Century shipwreck. Underwater sonar equipment turned up a strange object more than two miles beneath the waves just before Christmas. Earlier this month they sent down an unmanned submarine to take a picture. Experts at the Western Australian Museum think it is a 19th-century ship made of metal. This is the second uncharted shipwreck found miles beneath the waves during the search for the missing plane. Last year, investigators released ghostly images of man-made debris scattered along the sea floor, including what is clearly an old anchor. As the nation's ocean agency, NOAA has a vested interest in the scientific and cultural aspects of the Titanic and in its appropriate treatment and preservation. NOAA's focus is to build a baseline of scientific information from which we can measure the shipwreck's processes and deterioration, and then apply the knowledge we gain to other deepwater shipwrecks and submerged cultural resources. A ghostly shipwreck that looked like something from Pirates of the Caribbean has been discovered with hidden treasures on board. Eerie footage shows that on deck and inside the rooms, everything is perfectly preserved - with a few added barnacles of course. The John V Moran has been found at the bottom of Lake Michigan in the northern United States after 116 years and it's in such good condition the glass in some of the windows remains intact. The steamship was discovered by the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association off the coast of Muskegon last month during a sonar search. Because she sits under 365 feet of lake water they waited for warmer weather to take the plunge along with the Michigan State Police Underwater Recovery Unit. Association boss Craig Rich said: "Not a railing is missing. The mast is standing. The lights are standing. "The anchors are in position. There’s even glass still in the windows.” “The only thing missing from this wreck is the smokestack.” The vessel was among many steamers owned by Capt. Edward Gifford Crosby who later died on the Titanic. According to the Grand Rapids Press the last time anyone saw the Moran was Sunday, February 12, 1899. The 214-foot ship was only 11 years old when she took her final voyage carrying a cargo of flour, animal feed, peas, oil cake and miscellaneous freight. Ice punched a hole in the hull and the ship began to flood. As water began to overwhelm the pumps, Capt. John McLeod ordered the crew of 24 into the lifeboats. Thankfully for the crew, the Moran had been paced across the lake by her sister steamer Naomi, which heard the distress whistle and the crew were rescued. John V. Moran shipwreck. Consolacion Shipwreck Pirates wreaked so much havoc in on the seas, they could actually make their enemies sink their own boats. In August of 1680 a ship called the Consolacion sunk off the coast of Ecuador. The galleon was encountered by a group of English pirates, after it had picked up a large amount of gold from Lima, Peru. Before Pirates could get their hands on some of the treasures they were seeking the Spanish, set the ship on fire. They’d rather have the boat at the bottom of the sea then hand it over. A crew of explorer eventually salvaged the wreck in 1997 near the Santa Clara Island of Ecuador. Large amounts of gold and silver coins were uncovered and are even on sale online. 4. Montego Bay Pirate Treasure Montego Bay located on the island of Jamaica is an infamous place where pirates commonly lurked so it made for an excellent location to search for pirate treasures! A group of American treasure hunters set sail in the jamaican waters hoping to snatch some booty. The 17th century English vessel named the Manticore, was badly damaged and found in international waters just outside the Jamaican border limit. One of the scuba swimmers, Rick Miller, describes it as being an amazing experience, with gold and silver everywhere! Treasure’s one could only dream of! Just the weight of the precious metals alone is worth 187 million dollars. 3. Black Beard’s Ship in North Carolina In 1966, a an important piece of history was brought to the surface with the help from underwater divers off the coast of Beaufort, North Carolina. The vessel of, Queen Anne’s Revenge finally saw the light of day once again. This time, the boat came from Blackbeard himself and it is a true miracle this artifact from the past was brought to surface. They came across the heavy cannons, some weighing 2000 pounds each. 30 cannons were found total. Each cannonball that was fired, weighed at least 6 pounds. More than 280,000 rare historical facts were found. This pirate met Davy Jones locker in a gruesome fashion. British soldiers displayed is severed head on the ship where he was executed as a warning to pirates. That’s just a pirate’s life for you. This replica is what it possibly would have looked like at full strength and would have struck fear in any sailors heart! His flag was also gruesome. 2. Pirates Hand While doing a little bit of cleaning, a Florida couple in Tampa Bay were going through their attic when they came across a startling discovery. In the attic was a wooden box with a treasure map. Spanish coins and the strangest of all; a severed hand with a ring on it! Could these be some artifacts left from the legendary Jose Gaspar, a legendary Spanish pirate who would sail off the west coast of Florida, although it’s still a mystery of whether he even existed at all. Before you start jumping to conclusions, the authenticity is hard to prove. Pirates weren’t too well-known for openly documenting their every move. The Tampa Bay History curator, told WFLA news that he believed the coins are too thin to be authentic. And who knows if that hand thing is even real?! Is this finding a morbid hoax or possibly an unbelievable pirate hoax? 1. The Whydah Discovery The Whydah was a British slave ship that was originally captured by “Black Sam” and was found off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts in 1984 by Barry Clifford. He actually credits a pirate treasure map that many discredited as being false. It seems to be the holy grail of pirate discoveries! Priceless artifacts were discovered including 200,000 individual pieces were received under only 14 feet of water. Rare gold and silver coins, gold jewelry and artifacts, cannons, sword handles and even a boy’s leg! The boat is believed to carry the plunder of 10 ships. Spanish Galleons were relentless looted by Black Sam until him and his crew were swept away by a strong storm in 1717. Divers pulled together huge clumps of gold coin masses that stuck together from years of being underwater. A museum exhibition called “Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah, from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship”, toured the United States. Barry believes there is more treasure out there from this wreck.

The hunt for MH370 no longer makes headlines, but what some have described as the most complex search in history has continued for almost two years. Three ships are methodically combing the belly of the southern Indian Ocean. Before this search, scientists knew more about the surface of the moon than the bottom of this stretch of water, so it is not surprising that they keep revealing secrets. Along with the shipwrecks, a number of previously unknown underwater volcanoes have been discovered. The search teams have now checked two thirds of the 120,000 sq km search zone.

Shipwreck Detectives : Teardrop of Treasure On a dangerous reef in Sri Lanka lies a wreck that has been systematically plundered by treasure hunters. Its identity remains one of the most enduring mysteries of maritime archaeology. Another wreck - the Dolphin - went down carrying twenty-nine chests of silver and has never been found. Jeremy and Corioli want to find the wreck and its treasure before it is looted of all its precious cargo. In Galle harbour, another important wreck is being excavated, the 17th Avondster. It has become the focus of a major international training program in excavation and preservation based at Sri Lanka's fledgling maritime archaeological unit. After several hours of searching for the Dolphin, Jeremy and Corioli are forced to call off the search as the weather conditions start to deteriorate and the swell rises. With the weather taking a turn for the worse, Jeremy and Corioli decide to postpone their search for the Dolphin until they return in the New Year. Within days of the team leaving, a massive earthquake in Asia sends forth a dark wave of destruction.

Malaysia has expanded the search area for the six people that remain missing after their boat sank off Sabah state on North Borneo, with neighboring Brunei also joining the search effort, authorities said Monday. The rescue center has created a map that shows a defined 2,100 square nautical miles divided into seven areas that will be searched. The Malaysian government has deployed its Navy, coastguard, police and air force to join the search and rescue operation. "5:30 this morning, our aircraft take off and conducted the patrol in the area and today we are expecting at least another three aircraft. One belong to the coastguard, Malaysia. Two will be the air force, Malaysia and one aircraft also from Brunei. So we are going to comb the area together with our surface asset. So at the moment we have seven surface asset to comb those waters. This combination of aircraft and surface ships and vessel, we hope we can find some result," said Director General Dato Sri, of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). So far 20 Chinese tourists and 2 crew members have been rescued, three dead and six people remain missing. The surviving Chinese tourists were sent back to hospitals in Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, for treatment early Monday. Their boat went missing on Saturday when traveling from Kota Kinabalu to Pulau Mengalum, a popular tourist island, 60 kilometers west of Kota Kinabalu. A total of 31 people were on board, including 28 tourists from China and three crew members. The police are currently investigating the cause of the accident. Peruvian and Colombian patrol boats are searching for people missing for nearly two days after the boat they were traveling in sank on a stretch of the Amazon River that runs through Peru's Loreto region. According to the Latin American Herald Tribune, a missing 17-year-old girl and a woman have now been confirmed dead. The boat Flipper II sailed from Iquitos and was heading for Santa Rosa. It was carrying two crew members and 18 passengers, including six foreign nationals from Russia, India, the United States, Chile and Colombia. According to the Latin American Herald Tribune, the boat hit a submerged tree trunk near Boca Cacao and started sinking. The first rescue operations were conducted by tourism vessels in the area which were able to rescue 12 of the passengers before a Colombian patrol boat arrived in the afternoon to pick them up, EFE reported. The river patrol boat Rio Putumayo and Colombian navy patrol vessels are participating in the search operations. Three of those missing are reportedly minors.
